Seeking a Doctoral Researcher in Test-ArtUp
The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) seeks applications for a position as Doctoral Researcher in Sustainability and Resource Economics in its Research Center “Global Commons and Climate Policy”. (limited for the three years, 75 % of a full-time employment, Salary: Entgeltgruppe TV-L E13)
The research carried out by the Global Commons and Climate Policy Research Center focuses on three topics: climate, land, and ocean. It analyzes in particular the effectiveness, efficiency, and distributional implications of national and international climate policies, the suitability of land and agricultural policies for shaping the transformation process toward sustainable development, taking international repercussions on global markets into account, and the contribution of natural ocean-based resources and services to inclusive wealth.
The doctoral research in the present project focuses on assessing sustainable marine development, in particular in the context of ocean-based negative emissions technologies (https://cdrmare.de/). The aim is to analyze how various ocean-based negative emissions technologies impact sustainable development, embedded in frameworks of weak and strong sustainability, especially applying the inclusive wealth framework. The application of the inclusive wealth framework will also inform the development of natural-capital accounts that document changes in countries’ stocks of natural resources, and quantify their losses. The research in the project covers also aspects related to governance of marine resources in de facto open-access regimes. The position provides many opportunities for an intensive exchange with the parallel projects at Kiel University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. We offer the opportunity to do a doctorate in economics in one of the main centers for ocean-related interdisciplinary research in Europe.
Job description:
- analyzing the influence of ocean-based negative emissions technologies on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
- assessing progress against SDG 14 between countries and over time, including shadow-price information to derive inclusive wealth assessments
- interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration within the CDRmare network
- presentation and discussion of methods and results with national and international project partners
- writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
- presentation of results at national and international conferences
We are looking for a candidate who meets the following criteria:
- excellent master degree in “Environmental and Resource Economics”, “Sustainability Economics” or equivalent
- interest in Resource Economics and Sustainable Development
- quantitative skills (modelling, statistics)
- excellent English communication skills (speaking and writing)• innovative and eager to develop own ideas
- team-oriented and strong organizational skills
The working language is English; excellent English skills are therefore required. Some knowledge of German would be useful, but is not essential.
