Workshop on Environmental Monitoring of Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal

How can the environmental impacts of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) field experiments be monitored responsibly? This question was at the center of the workshop »Monitoring Environmental Impacts of mCDR Field Tests«, held on 5 September 2025 at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and organised by the CDRmare Social Sciences and Humanities Hub.

The international workshop brought together 45 scientists involved in mCDR research to exchange perspectives on environmental Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (eMRV) for mCDR field experiments. Across three thematic sessions, international experts shared insights on the current state of scientific knowledge, experiences from conducted and planned field experiments, and the evolving legal context relevant to eMRV.

The workshop highlighted the importance of continued interdisciplinary dialogue on eMRV and demonstrated the strong interest within the research community in developing shared, science-based approaches to monitoring environmental impacts of mCDR field experiments. Key insights from the discussions will be compiled in a workshop report.
