Social Science and Humanities Hub (HUB)

The Social Sciences and Humanities Hub is a forum established to enable, and increase, academic co-operation between the social science and humanities scholars involved in CDRmare. Within the Hub, relevant and current issues relating to the regulation and governance of mCDR options will be addressed in an open and responsive manner. On the one hand, the hub is responsive in that the scientists cooperating in it take up questions that are brought to ASMASYS II from the method-specific projects and from the fields of politics and regulation (in particular via the regularly held expert workshops). On the other hand, the participating scientists also conduct research independently of external input on the social and humanities aspects of mCDR, which are currently being discussed nationally, regionally (especially in the context of the EU) and globally.

The Hub is coordinated by Alexander Proelss and the project team at the UHH, while its management is based at GEOMAR.

Key topics addressed within the framework of the Hub include:

  • Normative and empirical questions related to governance regimes, including their interaction with international, EU, and national legal instruments.
  • Integration of mCDR into emissions and offsetting trading systems, such as the role of ‘climate clubs’ and the newly established Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism.
  • Responsibility and liability of state and private actors involved in mCDR activities.

Tools and Activities

The Hub utilizes various tools and formats to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange:

  • Internal Workshops: Interdisciplinary sessions on specific topics and for exchange between the various social and humanities disciplines represented within CDRmare.
  • Thematic Workshops: Thematic workshops of the HUB integrate external expertise (including both national and international scholars, stakeholders and government officials) to explore key social science and humanities topics in greater depth.
  • HUB-Publications, as public reports, working paper, or summary factsheet
